This unit provides practical training in adaptable indoor and outdoor gardening activities for those working in care and community settings. It is designed to build your confidence, skills, and knowledge in delivering gardening sessions tailored to your clients’ needs. No prior experience is required.


What this unit covers

Summer topics:

  • How summer conditions affect plant growth
  • Key seasonal signs to recognise
  • Gardening tasks appropriate for this time of year

Practical activities:

  • Creating a herb planter
  • Potting up a hanging basket
  • Taking softwood cuttings (“Plants for Free”)
  • Engaging clients and volunteers through fun garden activities

Specialist techniques:

  • Adapting activities for different abilities
  • Engaging and supporting clients
  • Planning and reflecting on gardening sessions

Key dates

  • Available: 1st June – 31st August
  • Deadline for completing all activities and coursework: 31st August

IT requirements

This unit is delivered via the Moodle online learning platform. To participate, you will need:

  • Internet access
  • Ability to play YouTube videos
  • A device capable of taking and uploading photos (e.g. smartphone) for assignments

Gardening provides rich, stimulating and beneficial activity for many people. 
How do you go about providing gardening activities in care, education and community settings?

This FREE short unit training course offers inspiration, insights and suggestions as to how to adapt and provide a number of gardening activities for your clients -  for each season of the year.  This FREE unit also provides a taster of the certificated and assessed Seasonal Gardening Activities training programme (4 discrete units).  The seasonal programme provides ideal CPD and staff training for those who have little/ no gardening knowledge, but wish to carry out season-appropriate gardening activities with clients, in a range of care settings. No prior gardening knowledge is required. 

Learn at your own pace - this Trellis Online Learning course is delivered using:

  • Activity Sheets to print/download
  • 'How to' video resources to view
  • Signposting to Other Useful Resources

This course is designed to increase your repertoire of activities and raise awareness of adaptive techniques. Approx. 5 hrs.

Providing practical training in adaptable indoor and outdoor seasonal gardening activities for those working in care and community settings.
This unit will empower you with the skills and knowledge required to enable you to adapt gardening activities to your clients needs.
No prior knowledge or experience is required.

This unit covers:
Spring - How Spring affects plant growth, Seasonal Signifiers, What can be done in the garden at this time of year.
Gardening Activities -  Seed Sowing, Growing Edible Flowers, Pricking Out Seedlings, Growing  Potatoes in a Bag,   Creating a Sensory Garden Patch, Spring- Painted Pebbles 
Specialist Techniques - Adapting gardening activities; Engaging your clients;  The  Importance of Planning & Reflecting on your Gardening Activities. 

This Spring unit is available to access from 1st March to 31st May
The deadline for accessing all resources, completing tasks and submitting coursework for the Spring unit is 31st May.

IT Requirements This Unit is delivered via the Moodle online learning platform. You are viewing this Unit at the moment via Moodle. To be able to access the unit you will need: internet access, an ability to play YouTube videos and a means of taking photographs (e.g. mobile phone) to send/upload as required by some course assignments.
